UFO Over Orange County, California

Oh, my god...oh, my god...

I've just seen my first unidentified flying object. It appeared first as a bright light in the sky seen from my living room where I was watching the film Breech on HBO. Upon going outside to investigate, I saw what I at first thought was some kind of pyrotechnic leave a ring of flame against the dark stormy sky some distance from the source of the bright light I had seen through the window -- a brilliant oval of light, saucer-shaped, moving slowly in a north by northwest direction. A small private or commuter plane appeared to be circling or following the slower-moving object. Occasionally a ring of fire would appear to encircle the bright ovals perimeter, like some kind of fiery exhaust blast. I ran inside to get my camera and when I returned I barely had gotten the lens cap off and flicked the ON switch when the "saucer" moved beyond my field of view and I never saw it again. This whole episode lasted about a minute and a half. The lone plane continued to circle the sky in that direction for several minutes and then turned to the south east.

Hey we saw this too. I created this account just to reply to your comment. But what we saw was actually two meteor like objects that seem to burn out then reignite. They also seemed to change direction. We were in the Yorba Linda, Brea area of Orange County when we saw it. Have you heard any news reports about this? We tripped out pretty hard.

I read an old article today from the register about a guy who flys remote controlled "UFOs" over orange county. I hope it wasnt him.

I found that article, too, while searching for anything relating to what we saw. It seems to me that what I saw was much larger than his playthings (if the plane that was circling in the air above of it is any indicator). I don't know what to think, now.

hey,
I got onto this link from someone that replied to my o.c. craigs list ( general community forum UFO sighting). I was on the 57Nfwy @ orangethorpe sat approx. 5:55 pm. Traffic slowed and stopped within 1/2 mile of everyone spotting the light. It innitionally appeared as a portal like object high in the sky. then immediately turned into a triangular aura like object, slowly turning and revealing a burning tail then slowly becoming triangular again. We all stopped on the fwy. for a good one and 1/2 min. thanx for the reply, I'm not nuts

I saw a "ufo" once. My friends and i were all chatting back and forth via aim. One of us went out for smoke and came back excited exclaiming he saw a ufo and told all of us to go outside and look. He grabbed his parents video recorder and ran outisde. All of us (spread out within miles of each other all over the town) saw the light"ufo" thing. The first friend caught it on camera and gave it to the local news station but no one belived him.

What the ufo looked like : a little white dot with a reddish tint, no bigger than a star in the sky. It ocassionally blinked its lights. It looked simalure to the light or a red laser pointer but there where no clouds in the sky to capture a beam of light like that, just a pure clear sky. It moved like a laser pointer too. Around in circles very fast, the flight pattern was ver hectic and nothing like a plane could physically do. Litterally like someone was drawing scribbles in the sky with a laser pointer. And then it stopped dead in its tracks, and then a few minutes later flew at the spead of light across the sky and none of us saw it again.

A total of 12 people spanning 3 - 15 miles in distance of each other saw it, but no one belived us! Even with proof.

As an amateur astronomer, I've spent a lot of time looking at the night sky and I've seen some strange things before, but...I've NEVER seen anything like this. It was like something out of a sci-fi movie.

Virtually every odd thing I've seen in the past could logically be explained in one way or another. That is, until now. Telescopes are keys to the universe. You can explore alien worlds and have great adventures without leaving your back yard.

Here's what the other person wrote in their email to me earlier:
"Hey, I saw those lights tonight, but from much farther away. I keep
trying to search online to see what the heck it was & you're the only
one to post so far, so I went to your site. I was way out in Yorba
Linda, so it was too far to make out shapes from there, but it looked
like TWO bright lights with tails (like a comet) falling from the
commercial plane at first, and then they'd fall, and stop mid-air, then
fall more, and stop, and then one disappeared, then later the other
went below the horizon. TOTALLY weird. First time for me too.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my good camera with me. Just a crappy
pocket digital, so I got a little bad video of it. But I'm a
photographer, too. (Nice shots on your site, by the way).

What do you think it was??? Was it really "saucer shaped"?

That airplane (or whatever it was) eventually stopped circling and came
our way. 2 white lights in front, and one blinking below. But I
couldn't see if there were wings or if it was a helicopter. It MOVED
like a copter when it was above the objects, but when it came this way,
it flew like an airplane, but I couldn't tell what kind.

Any thoughts??? Any sites covering it?"

I only saw the one bright light, a saucer-shaped oval, the whole thing glowed with a brilliant yellow-white light. But I DID see a separate "ring of fire" thing that appeared briefly about 5 degrees north of the saucer-shaped light, almost like a short-lived sky rocket moving in a tight oval or circular pattern, but I only saw it that one instant. It did sort of look like a meteor, except for the way it moved. A few seconds after that, the bright saucer-thing emitted a ring of fire identical to the one I had seen earlier. I saw the saucer-thing do this twice before I lost sight of it. It was moving northward, apparently over Fullerton, and getting lower to the horizon when it went behind trees and disappeared. Durng all of this a small plane was circling in the sky above the object as if it were watching it and the only sound I heard was the planes engine. Man, two more seconds and I would have had a bitchin photograph of it.

Thanks, keep me posted if you turn up anything new.

I saw the whole thing unfold from my vantage point at the intersection of Tustin Avenue and La Palma, in Anaheim. Objects appearing to trail flames descended through broken cloud cover of thick, puffy rain clouds trailing a storm system that has just passed through.

I expected the objects to be meteors, a falling satellite, or an aircraft that had blown up, but when the brightest and largest of the objects stopped falling and hivered at the height of the cloud base, I knew it counld not be any of those. The objects seemed to shift back and forth horizontally, and in a most unusual way.

Each time they moved, there seemed to be what looked like flames or some other glowing plasma effect that would trail behind and then dissipate once the motion stopped. I now attribute that to the effect a large, very bright object would generate by moving among cloud vapor, which would then appear flamelike, being so brightly illuminated. This also shows the objects had physical volume enough to displace the air around them, and were LARGE physical objects, not just lights, which would not cause the cloud vapors to trail behind them when they moved about.

As I watched, the two objects were quickly joined by a plane, which began to circle the two large bright lights very closely, apparently investigating. I believe a helicopter also joined them. It was very easy to tell the difference between the two bright objects and the aircraft that were circling and investigating them. The two objects each appeared to be 3-5 times larger than the airplane, and exceedingly bright, e,manating a very pure and brilliant orangish white light.

As the objects drifted slowy toward the northwest, against the wind, nearby trees and buildings obscured my view, so I gave chase. I zig-zagged my way about 3 miles where I was forced to stop at a traffic light on Orangethorpe, about a mile west of Kraemer. As I watched, the objects then abruptly disappeared, the aircraft did one more cirtcle of the spot where they had been, and then broke off, heading southeast, directly toward my location, headed toward John Wayne Airport. Within a minute or two, the plane passed directly and low overhead, where I was able to see and hear it. It appeared to be a medium sized twin turboprop engine plane.

There has to be radar records showing, at the very least, that plane, and possibly a helicopter, both circling at just below cloud base altitude. With the number of witnesses, and the large urban population, someone somewhere must have gotten photos and/or video. It is killing me that I was unable to do either.

Thank you for sharing this with us. The more people who can report their observation of this event, the better. From the reports I've read and from the witnesses who've contatced me via this blog, I'm beginning to suspect that the object or objects, whatever their nature, were not as large nor as distant as they might have appeared to be. I'm interested in knowing what direction you saw the objects last (from your description, I'm assuming you were somewhere near Orangethorpe and State College), that is, what direction were you looking in relationship to your westward driving on Orangethorpe (north, northwest, or more westerly?)

I have seen two in this house, the similarities are that the plane was doing normal plane speed and .. flight patterns for lack of a better description. It was flying in a strait line. The UFOs had similarities in that they were moving faster, and both had sharp angles to their flight pattern, faster than any plane I had ever heard of. The rest is different. One was a bright white light, the other a series of colored lights (red, green and white, blinking) in a triangular configuration. In both cases I saw the UFO for a while, moving too fast, and angular for a regular aircraft (from what I know of them) and then suddenly disappear. Again, I assume it flew off faster than my eye could catch.. while the planes were still there in my POV.

The weird lights

I'm the dude who emailed you. I'm not sure if you sent a response back, but I never got one, and I never even got the copy of the email I sent to you which I sent back to myself to remember what I said. Nothing. Weird.

Anyway, I checked out the video from my crappy pocket digital cam and it didn't come out very well. It was from so far away that you can only see the two headlights of the plane, and one of the falling lights going down, but the camera keeps re-focusing (it's just a still cam with video capability). But I knew I was seeing something unusual when it was happening. The sucky thing is that we were heading to Placentia, so if we'd left just slightly earlier we might have gotten a much better view of it, like you did.

I watched the news, and listened to the radio last night... nothing. I can't imagine that no one else saw it, or called it in. Too weird.

Sorry you didn't receive it, but I didn't write anything that I haven't already written elewhere in this thread. I want to thank you for contacting me. Like I told someone earlier in this thread, in all the years I've spent looking at the sky I've seen many strange things, all of which could be rationally explained.

This was a decidedly different kind of experience.

Hey we saw this too. My gf and i were on the top of the brea mall parking structure and as we were leaving we saw the objects in the dark sky. As the objects got closer to the ground we heard a bunch of fire truck sirens go off. My phone also stopped working. Im not sure if that was just a coincidence or if the objects had anything to do with it. We lost sight of the 2 objects after they descended behind the hill at bastanchury and state college. It had to be one of the weirdest things ive ever seen. Please let me know if anybody finds out what those things were.

UFO sighting Jan 26, 2008 - need to get FAA radar data. FOIA?
(Anonymous)
2008-08-17 09:05 am UTC (link)
We need to get the FAA radar data that will show the plan doing circles. If it does not show the objects, that is even better, as it proves the plane was circling SOMETHING of interest, and that SOMETHING was invisible to radar.

Onthe other hand, if it WAS visible to radar, then we will get speed and direction info which may show it simply materializing in the atmosphere and descending, or descending from outer space.

At any rate, the pilot of the plane and helicopter both got VERY close looks at these objects. What is suspicious to me is the speed at which they converged on the objects, and how they were so brave to get so close. It's almost like they knew they were coming, and what to expect.

I think we need to talk to these pilots, and radar and flight plan data should be available from FAA to make that possible. If not, we need to be asking WHY, as that would raise a whole other set of questions.

I can be contacted at ronbotek@hotmail.com

I was the guy Brian Vike wrote about who gave chase in my old Datsun 240Z sportscar.
